The case for compact
A small pool — call it a plunge pool, a tank pool, a dipping pool — typically runs three to six meters. That’s it. And that small footprint changes everything:
It fits. Courtyards, side yards, city plots, sloped gardens that would laugh at a full-size pool. If you have room for two parked cars, you probably have room for water.
It costs a fraction. Less excavation, less concrete, less water, less chemicals, less heating. Owners of compact pools routinely spend a third of what a full-size pool demands — to build and to run, month after month.
It gets used more. This is the part nobody expects. Big pools are for swimming; small pools are for living. Morning cold dips. A glass of wine at sunset, waist-deep. Kids in the shallow warmth. The pool stops being an event and becomes furniture — the best seat in the house.
What the relaxed life actually requires
Our iguana has a philosophy: the point of water is not exercise. The point of water is to be near it, in it, and slightly smug about it. A plunge pool delivers all three.
And the design world has caught up. Prefab tank pools arrive on a truck and are swimmable within days. Raised pools double as architecture — a terracotta-tiled wall of water in the middle of a courtyard. Some of the most photographed pools on the planet right now are barely bigger than a dining table.
Small pool, smart shopping
If the compact life is calling, three things are worth doing right:
- The shell. Prefab and container-style pools have become genuinely good — look for reinforced construction and a quality liner.
- The water care. Small volume means small equipment — a compact filter pump and a simple test kit cover most setups.
- The scene. This is where small pools win. Because you saved on size, you can spend on atmosphere: loungers, umbrella, lanterns, planters. The pool is the anchor; the life happens around it.
